A rare insight into Jil Sander through the perspective of one of Germany’s most influential fashion writers, cultural thinkers and a long-time collaborator of Sander, Ingeborg Harms. 

RESEARCH NOTE

Harms first encountered Sander in Hamburg in the early 1970s, visiting her first store at the age of sixteen. Decades later, that encounter developed into a close professional relationship and a series of collaborations, including Jil Sander by Jil Sander (2024), created with Harms and book designer Irma Boom.

In conversation with Freya Roski, Harms reflects on Sander’s pursuit of perfection, her ideas around modernity, craftsmanship and individuality, and the person behind her famously private public image.

The conversation also explores how fashion history can be understood through people, objects, images and memory.
